Overview of Blessed Mother Teresa's Life
Mother Teresa was born on 26 th of August 1910. She was born in Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in Skopje Macedonia. Mother Teresa was the third child born in her family. Her parent were Albanian Catholic. When Mother Teresa was 8 years old her father died unexpectedly. This was a very hard time for the family as Dranafile the mother suddenly became a single mother with 3 child to support. Dranafile sold textiles and hand-made embroidery to bring in some income for the family. Mother Teresa's family believed deeply into there religion and especially after it. The family would got to pilgrimages annually and pray daily.
At 12 tears of age Mother Teresa began to feel the call to become a nun to serve God. However to become a nun it is difficult and requires to give up a lot including giving up your family forever. In the time that Mother Teresa was deciding to be a nun she sung in the Church choir, helped her mother with organising church events, and handed out food and supplies to the poor while walking with her mother. She did this for 5 years. When Mother Teresa was 17 she decided that she was going to become a nun. To make this decision she read many articles about the work of the Catholic Missionaries that they were conducting in India and Mother Teresa was than determined to go there. She than applied to go to the Loreto order of nuns, which is in Ireland and has mission in India. In September 1928 when she was 18 years old Mother Teresa said goodbye to her family and she than travelled to Ireland than India. She never again saw her mother sister again.
It took Mother Teresa over two tears to become a Loreto nun. She then went to the Loreto Entally convent in Kolkata where she taught history and geography at the convent schools. At 25 years old she went to teach at St. Teresa School which was outside the convent. On May 24 1937 Mother Teresa took her final vows and became “Mother Teresa”. After taking her vows she than became Principle of St. Mary's in a convent school.
Mother Teresa was the Principle for 9 years. On the 10th of September 1946 Mother Teresa got a “call within a call” as this is how Mother Teresa explained it. The call told her to help the poor by living among them and to leave the convent. It took 2 years for Mother Teresa to get permission to leave the convent. Once she got their permission she went to Patna with the Medical Mission Sisters to learn some basic medical knowledge. She then went to the slums in December 1948.
When Mother Teresa got to the slums she found some children and taught them using some dirt and a stick to draw letters. She than was able to rent a hut and used It for a classroom. In the year she has she got 10 former pupils helping her. Her year was up however she petitioned to form her own order of nuns; the Missionaries of Charity. It was granted in October t 7 1950 by Pope Pius XII.
Mother Teresa opened a home for the dying. In 1955, the missionaries of Charity opened their first children’s home this place would car for orphans. Mother Teresa taught the people about Leprosy to spread awareness and made a Leper colony called Shani Nagar which means “The Place of Peace”. This place was for lepers they could live and work there.
Mother Teresa worked until she died at 87 on September 5 1997 of heart failure. When Mother Teresa died she had left over 4000 missionary of Charity sisters. On October 19 2003 the Pope approved Mother Teresa’s beatification awarding her with the title “Blessed”.
